A Summer in Turkey
Jan 03, 2024If there's one destination that continually tugs at our heartstrings, it's Turkey. The enchanting blend of breathtaking scenery, mouthwatering cuisine, and an indescribable vibe keeps calling us back for more. This time we went to the picturesque town of Kalkan for an unforgettable 3-week vacation.
Our journey began in Dubai, with my parents and three kids. We landed at Milas-Bodrum airport and embarked on a 4.5-hour scenic drive to Kalkan. It was a long drive, but was quickly forgotten once we stepped into the charming villa with a pool that offered breathtaking views of the sea. The perfect place for lazy summer days that will be spent soaking up the sun and creating memories.
A beach club within walking distance became our go-to spot for swimming in the sea and enjoying leisurely lunches - but the walk back to the villa was quite a hike up the steep roads, our fitness was definitely challenged! On some evenings when the sun began to set and the weather cooled we would stroll to Kalkan's old quarter with its charming harbor, surrounded by Turkish wooden gulets, small fishing crafts and waterfront restaurants.
We wandered through its winding streets, lined with traditional houses and boutique shops. The traditional restaurants lining the streets were always buzzing with people having a wonderful time, and on occasion a blast of loud (and somewhat questionable) music from various corners would fill your ears.
Local markets were our treasure troves for fresh fruits, vegetables, and cheese, allowing us to savor the authentic flavors of the region. One evening, my sister and I stole away from the group to explore the quaint village of Kas. Boutique shops, delectable mussels and rice from a street cart, and a taste of traditional Manti filled our evening. The thrilling drive back to Kalkan along the winding streets kept us on the edge of our seat — those taxi drivers are notorious drivers!
We also went on an adventurous day trip to Saklikent gorge with its soaring sculpted walls towering above and the sound of water rushing through parts of the gorge. We had one obstacle ahead of us before we could walk through the gorge, and that was crossing the river. The fresh mountain water was freezing, reaching waist height in some parts. We managed to walk through the ice cold flowing river water to go exploring, the gorge was vast! We clambered over rocks, pulling each other up, enjoying the scenery as we walked through and found ourselves at a lovely waterfall! A day well spent :)
Our vacation in Kalkan was a blend of relaxation, exploration, and family bonding. From lazy days by the pool to the seaside and evenings in the old quarter, we created beautiful memories in a country close to our hearts.
