The Spirit of Ramadan: How Expats Can Join In (Even If Youโ€™re Not Fasting)

Feb 26, 2025

Ramadan in Dubai is more than just a month of fasting—it’s a time of reflection, kindness, and community. Whether you’re Muslim or not, there’s something truly special about experiencing this season in a place as diverse as the UAE. You don’t have to be fasting to take part in the spirit of Ramadan, and there are plenty of ways to embrace this beautiful time, no matter your background.

Here’s how you can respectfully and meaningfully experience Ramadan as an expat in Dubai:

1. Understanding the Meaning of Ramadan

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, centered around fasting, prayer, charity, and self-reflection. From sunrise to sunset, Muslims fast from food, drinks, and other worldly distractions as a way to strengthen their faith and practice discipline. But beyond fasting, Ramadan is about togetherness, gratitude, and giving back.

As an expat, even if you’re not fasting, understanding the deeper meaning of Ramadan helps you appreciate the cultural and religious significance of the month and be more mindful of those around you.

2. Be Mindful of Public Etiquette

Dubai is very accommodating to expats, but during Ramadan, there are some changes to keep in mind:

  • Eating, drinking, or chewing gum in public is discouraged during fasting hours (most restaurants have designated areas for non-fasters).
  • Dress modestly as a sign of respect for the holy month.
  • Music is often toned down in public places, and entertainment venues might adjust their hours or activities.
  • Work and school schedules may change, with shorter hours to accommodate those fasting.

It’s all about being aware and respectful of the customs around you!

3. Accept Invitations to Iftar and Suhoor

If you’ve ever wanted to truly experience the warmth of Emirati and Islamic hospitality, Ramadan is the perfect time.

  • Iftar (the meal at sunset to break the fast) is a wonderful, communal experience. If a Muslim friend, colleague, or neighbor invites you to Iftar, say yes! It’s a beautiful way to connect, share a meal, and be part of the Ramadan spirit.
  • Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins) is also a great experience, often enjoyed in the late hours at outdoor tents, cafés, and hotels across Dubai.

Many hotels and restaurants also offer Iftar buffets—trying one is a must!

4. Join in the Spirit of Giving

One of the core values of Ramadan is charity and kindness. You can take part in this, regardless of your religion or beliefs.

Ways to give back during Ramadan:

  • Volunteer for Iftar meal distributions: Many organizations arrange food drives for workers and those in need.
  • Donate to a local charity: Whether it’s money, food, or clothes, every little bit helps.
  • Support your fasting friends: Small gestures—like waiting until Iftar to eat if you’re dining together—go a long way.

5. Enjoy the Ramadan Atmosphere

There’s something magical about Ramadan nights in Dubai. Once the sun sets, the city comes alive with lights, gatherings, and a sense of togetherness. Some things you can enjoy:

  • Visiting Ramadan markets and bazaars for traditional crafts and treats.
  • Experiencing cultural performances and exhibitions.
  • Taking a stroll in beautifully lit areas like Downtown Dubai, Marina, or Al Seef.

Ramadan isn’t just about the daytime fasting; the evenings are full of life and joy.

The Heart of Ramadan: Togetherness & Respect

Whether you’re fasting or not, Ramadan is an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and embrace the community around you. The spirit of Ramadan is about kindness, connection, and gratitude—things we can all take part in.

So, this Ramadan, immerse yourself in the experience, learn something new, and celebrate the beauty of a month that brings people together in so many ways.
